You love it - should you buy it?

Many different reasons might motivate you to purchase artwork. Those reasons tend to fall into three categories. But the subconscious thoughts and feelings are more subtle and complex than you might think.

  • It evokes a feeling

  • It’s part of a connection

  • It enhances a space in your home

Feelings

When you first see a well made artwork, it will always evoke a feeling.

  • An energetic painting gives you a feeling of energy, movement, or excitement.

  • A calm painting makes you feel peaceful, gives you a sense of rest, or makes you thoughtful.

  • You may get a sense of awe from the scale of the subject, such as majestic landscapes; the masterful skill of the artist; or an intimate look at life.

  • You may feel a sense of sympathy, concern, righteousness, determination, pride, etc. when looking at paintings that reflect important issues.

If a painting evokes a feeling that you enjoy or that matches the mood or purpose of the space where it will hang, that’s an excellent reason to purchase.

Connections

  • Sometimes an artwork reminds you of a favorite place, a vacation spot, or a type of place you love, such as beaches, flower gardens, farms, or mountains.

  • You may have a connection with the artist, the type of art, or the subject matter; and you want to hang the painting to remind you of those people, places, or things.

  • You find a fabulous piece of art while you’re on a trip, with loved ones, or during a special event; and owning that artwork is a permanent reminder of all that occurred around those occasions.

  • You may gift artwork to friends and family, and this constant reminder displayed in their homes forms a deep connection between you.

Spaces

Finding a great piece of art is a terrific way to bring a room alive. Think about how the artwork supports the mood or the way a space is used.

  • Paintings with evocative subjects or that remind you of past events may be great for an entertaining area and may stimulate interesting conversations!

  • A peaceful or imaginative painting may be perfect for a corner reading nook.

  • A warm friendly painting can help highlight a breakfast area within a larger kitchen.

  • Perhaps the artwork brings out the colors of the decor and compliments the use of the space.

There are many subtle factors that can influence your decision to purchase an artwork. In the end, it’s a timeless, priceless reflection of your life.
